There are a few things you will need to do or have as an employer to take on a trainee or an apprentice:
- Have experienced staff to work with and supervise the trainee or apprentice
- Have the relevant liability insurances
- Release the trainee or apprentice from work one day a week so they can attend college
- If you have an apprentice pay the apprentice at least the National Minimum Wage if the apprentice is in their first year which is £3.40 an hour currently but will be rising to £3.50 in April 2017 and then after their first year, the appropriate National Minimum Wage for their age (please follow this link for more information: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates)
